Alingsås is a Municipality in Västra Götaland County, in western Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 476.7 km². Of the total population of 35,153, 17,197 are male, and 17,956 are female. The population density of the community is 74 inhabitants per km².
The city of Alingsås received its privileges in 1619. It has a population of 22,030 (1996). The city is situated along the Western Railroad (Västra stambanan ) between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Among its historical inhabitants is Jonas Alströmer, mostly famous for bringing the potato to Sweden in the 1700's.
