National Cheng Kung University

National Cheng Kung University (Chinese: 國立成功大學, Tongyong Pinyin: GuóLì ChéngGong DàSyué, Hanyu Pinyin: Guólì Chénggōng Dàxué, Wade-Giles: Kuo2-li4 Ch'eng2-kung1 Ta4-hsüeh2), abbreviated as Cheng Da (成大), is located in Tainan City, Taiwan. Cheng Kung of National Cheng Kung University is adopted from Cheng Cheng-kung (Konxinga) who expelled the Dutch from Taiwan and settled down in Taiwan for continuing resistance against the Qing in Mainland China.

History

Cheng Kung University was established in January 1931 as Tainan Technical College (in Chinese: 臺南高等工業學校; in Japanese officially from 1942 to 1945: 臺南工業專門學校). Its names after the Japanese Occupation was Taiwan Provincial Tainan Junior College of Technology (台灣省立台南工業專科學校), then Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering School (台灣省立工學院).

As the number of colleges expanded, it was upgraded to a provincial university in 1956, then national in 1971.

Organization

The school has 6 colleges and has been led by President Dr. Chiang Kao (高強) since 2001.
