The Reversing Falls Rapids (also referred to as Reversing Falls) are located in Saint John, New Brunswick in a narrow gorge where the Saint John River empties into the Bay of Fundy. The diurnal tides of the bay force the river to reverse the flow of water upriver at this location when the tide is high, although in the spring freshet, this is frequently surpassed by the downstream volume of water. The rapids, or falls, are created by a series of underwater ledges which roil the water in either direction, causing a significant navigation hazard, despite the depth of water. As a result, vessels wishing to enter or exit from the river must wait for "slack tide".
For years, the Reversing Falls has been one of the main tourist attractions in Saint John, but sitting next to the Falls is a pulp and paper mill operated by the Irving Group which makes the Falls largely unappealing. Despite this, there are Jet Boat Rides in the waters of the Falls and is apparently very exciting.
